We wanted to make a beauty story that felt more like a painting than a photograph, being inspired specifically by watercolor as a medium. In order to make some of the photos feel like a painting, we toyed with the idea of shooting through water, glass or plastic to distort the image and create “watercolor” like effects. Initially, we referenced a lot of paintings to inspire the way makeup would be applied. One look was even derived from a face chart drawing by Hannah. In the end, this was a collaborative effort from the entire team with Owen’s swipes of color, blending from the face into the hair, Masha’s styling to round out the story and Jacqui’s unique set design skills to give us the underwater effect.
